Established in 2011, THE PIGs are a collection of laid-back hotels where the restaurant is the beating heart of the house. Tucked away in stunning corners of the British countryside and coast, the brand is defined by a homemade ethos that champions local suppliers and produce. For THE PIG, being a force for good is a core part of their DNA that requires rigorous data, transparency, and a commitment to leaving their patch in better shape than they found it.

The issue

Sustainability and environmental stewardship have been fundamental to THE PIG from day one. However, as the business grew, the team recognised that good intentions were not enough. To lead the hospitality industry effectively, they needed a mature and structured approach to understanding their impact.

A primary motivation was the desire to move beyond anecdotal evidence toward a data-led strategy that provided true accountability. Furthermore, as they embarked on the journey to B Corp certification, they needed to demonstrate a systematic approach to measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions to meet high global standards of social and environmental impact.

The challenges

Calculating a comprehensive footprint for a multi-site hospitality group is a complex undertaking. For THE PIG, this meant navigating the specialist and technical nature of carbon accounting, which requires detailed methodological knowledge and alignment with the GHG Protocol.

The team also faced the challenge of tracking emissions across diverse local supply chains. With each hotel operating its own unique 25-mile menu, the granularity of data required to identify hotspots across energy use, waste, and procurement was significant. They needed a partner that could simplify these complex concepts into practical, business-relevant actions without losing scientific integrity.

The solution

Partnering with Ecologi, THE PIG transitioned to a structured carbon footprinting process. Using the Ecologi Zero platform, the team calculated their carbon footprint across Scope 1, Scope 2, and key Scope 3 emissions.

Ecologi provided the expert technical support needed to ensure data quality and boundary setting, allowing the team at THE PIG to retain strategic oversight while relying on a robust methodological framework. This collaboration enabled them to establish a clear baseline and embed carbon measurement into their ongoing sustainability governance.

The results

The results of this data-led strategy have been transformative. THE PIG has now measured its carbon footprint several times, building an increasingly accurate picture of its emissions profile, which totalled 11,821.56 tCO2e in the 2024/25 reporting year. This rigorous approach was instrumental in THE PIG becoming B Corp certified in June 2024 with a score of 82.6 - significantly higher than the median.

The certification followed a comprehensive audit, where every aspect of the business was put under a microscope to evaluate its impact on people and the planet. Being part of the global B Corp community means meeting high standards of social and environmental impact, a commitment THE PIG shares with many of its partners.

Key operational and social highlights from the 2024/25 reporting period include:

  • Waste reduction - Refilling 14,500 guest room toiletry bottles using Bramley refillable bottles. Additionally, the group's soap recycling initiative donated over 800 bars to local communities, including Genesis Trust and New Forest Basics Bank.

  • Responsible sourcing - Saving 482,827 single-use bottles through a circular filtration partnership with Belu, and planting 5,000 trees in partnership with Sapling Spirits.

  • Community impact - Raising £140,200 for charity partners and completing 1,520 volunteering hours in 2025.

Looking ahead, THE PIG is using its emissions data to identify key hotspots – particularly within its Scope 3 food and drink supply chain - to inform its long-term decarbonisation plans.

In parallel, the group is deepening its social impact by training all Deputy General Managers on neurodiversity and expanding the "Adopt a School" programme, currently active across five hotels, with plans to roll it out to all locations in the near future.

“Our collaboration with Ecologi has brought clarity and confidence to our climate journey. Measuring our carbon footprint over three consecutive years has enabled continuous improvement, honest progress tracking and informed decision making. Ecologi’s support has also helped us navigate the complexity of our 25-mile menu approach and the diverse local supply chains across each of our hotels. As a fellow B Corp, it’s been reassuring to work with a partner that shares our values around transparency and accountability.”
